Renner is a strange casting for the role, though it's clear he was cast because of his success in the MCU, as opposed to being right for the part. The movie is essentially a standalone film but relies heavily on the Bourne world, which made a follow-up incredibly difficult. Shearing (Rachel Weisz) he remembers his past but must find a way to make his intelligence permanent, lest they be captured and killed by Byer. Like Bourne, Cross was declared dead in his previous life and has no memory of it. Initially, Bourne 6 promised to reunite Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass, but recent statements from Damon have thrown a shadow of doubt on his reprisal. Instead, the movie follows Jeremy Renner's Aaron Cross as he goes on the run from Eric Byer (Edward Norton). The Bourne Legacy is the only Bourne movie that wasn't directed by Paul Greengrass, and as a result, does not star Matt Damon as Bourne.
